Why are all these advertisements allowed on the boards.  Is there some way you can delete them.  I reported a couple as abuse, but there are five pages worth of them. Please get rid of them for us?

Thanks.

Maybe I have a filter you don't (???) but I don't have lots of adverts.  You have five pages of them?  That would drive me nuts!  BTW, how's the exercise coming, Jen?  The weather here in Maine is GLORIOUS right now (and don't we deserve it after the wettest summer since records have been kept back in 1871!).  So, after a slow start I am back out walking and enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of Indian Summer.  Bliss...and great for my bg, too.

Advertisements are not allowed on these boards. When we occasionally see them, we delete them, and we send a notice to the poster asking them not to post any further advertisements. Once in a while, a few inadvertently  sneak by us. This weekend it appears to be over the top and hundreds seem to have been repeatedly posted. We will delete ASAP.

Thank you John.  I couldn't believe it myself when I saw it.

Sprit:

The weather here has been glorius as well (I'm in MA).  I have rejoined the Y and will start back on Tuesday.  The pool was closed for a week for cleaning and maintenance.  They didn't tell me this until after I paid .  I can't wait to get back in the pool.  Water Aerobics is now free so that will be fine.

Hope  you are well and enjoy the warm weather whil it lasts.  It won't be long until.....

John:

I just noticed that there are many more posts that have appeared since I came on the Board. Is there some way they can kp the posts from posting if they are ads?  This is ridiculous.

Thanks.

jen1229,

They are continuing through the long holiday.  I am getting very upset that the moderators are not aware that this is their tactics and have no one (they are all on holiday) monitoring the site and deleting these.

The advertisers are the problem on any forum.  Their philosophy is to advertise when people may not delete as quickly and thus get their word out and maybe have people using the forum believe that because they are not deleted promptly that the site is endorsing the ad, thus increasing sales.

Fortunately, I think the members of this site are as upset about this as you are.  I know I am!  Something needs to be done and promptly before the site gets clogged and we can't use it.

I would think Joslin's ITS would be on top of blocking Spam from their servers.  Obviously not this weekend/holiday.

I don't know if you all realize it but the original ads were deleted. These came on thsi morning (after midnight) because I was on the boards when I noticed a new batch all dated September 7.  I don't blame them for taking the day off.  I'm sure they will take care of the problem tomorrow.  It would be nice, however if there were some way to keep people from doing this kind of multiple post.  The problem is that each post has a different name.  How do they register all these names?

Because the process is automated, it is easy.  These companies hire real people to do this so that the reading of the numbers and letters can be accomplished (thus bypassing the block set up to prevent machine generated joining) and in they come after that - with computer programs doing the work after membership is obtained.  This is not the only place they are bombarding with their ads.  In fact, several forums are having moderators work almost full time this weekend to block and delete.

Then after the sites addresses are blocked out, they route through other sites and repeat the process to post their ads or spam.  A vicious cycle is set up to bypass most security blockouts or flood the site with spam to prevent use by regular patrons.  This is somewhat similiar to what has happened to Twitter, Facebook, and others.  Once they determine that a website such as this is easy to get into, it may take months to get things returned to normal.

OK, now I get it!  I seemed to have missed the first batch (maybe they were removed before I logged on?), but I've gotten the current crop.  MOST annoying!

Hi John!

Nice to see these boards a little more active!

I hope that now that Labor Day has come and gone more posters will be involved in this board!
