I can tell when my blood sugar is low, I get dizzy, my eyes get spots in front,  I generally feel very wierd, ect.

But I can't tell if my blood sugar is high.  Do any of you have symptoms of any kind when your blood sugar is high.

yes.

Depending on how high it is....150-200 or so, I actually feel kind of paranoid.  Its odd, but its not quite paranoia, its a sense of impending doom, or something.  Very strange. above 200 I just want to take a nap.

I believe studies have found that diabetics can't reliably detect high blood glucose - only low. However, sometimes I think I get a ringing in the ears when BG is 200 or so. But generally the only thing that tells me BG is high is my meter.

I would agree with that at dx.....most of us paid little attention to the effects of blood sugar until a dr. explained that we were basically cooking from the inside out.  Having been a dx'd diabetic for almost 10 yrs, I think I've developed a bit more sensitivity to the way it can make me feel.   Just part of being vigilant about it I guess.

Our studies have found that people with diabetes often do not reliably detect either low or high blood glucose levels based upon symptoms alone. The lows are often more obvious and distressing. Our research tells us that people often don't recognize the highs until blood glucose levels range into the 250-300 level.

I would verify what John said.  When I go over 300, I feel tired - almost the same as I feel when I am around 45-50 - just weary.  So only a test tells me whether I am high or low.  On the rare occasions when I go over 350, I get a dry mouth and my extremities tingle.

I sometimes but not always get a warning of high blood sugar through blurred vision and occasionally a stinging sensation in the eyes. However, and this is kind of important, I only get that sensation if blood sugars hav risen rapidly, not if they've been slowly increasing and then staying high. For example, I once ate a whole basket of strawberries (I thought they were 'free' foods), After about 15 minutes my eyes were stinging. When I checked blood sugars they were 252, On the other hand, after diagnosis and before I got my blood sugars under control I'd have after meal readings of up to 324 without feeling any particular side effects. The negative side effects from rapid rising rings a bell for me as well given that I used to do a lot of scuba diving.

I agree with you with the stinging eyes.  But I have never tested higher than 225 and that was before I started any diabetes med.  Now I am never higher than say 180 after eating too many carbs.  But I can tell when I have high like that  by getting very sleepy that I can not keep my eyes open.  I also feel puffy plus a sensation in my body I do not like.  I usually go out walk but sometimes I do nap.

I never go lower than 80 as far as I know.  I am T2 since 2000 with glucophage and Actos the last few years.  6.2 Halc last test.

Symptoms of high glucose can occur when glucose is over 180.  Increase thirst, urination, fatigue, blurred vision, hunger are the typical signs.

I have started not recognizing my lows.  I have been 52 and not had any symptoms.  When I am swimming I can go low and not know it because you don't sweat in the water.  Sometimes I do get shaky and sometimes not.

High -- Oh, yes.  I've actually fallen asleep after a meal with my head on the kitchen table.  Other times, my heart isn't necessarily beating fast, but I can also feel as if the rest of my circulatory system is racing.

T2, diagnosed 12/98.  Diet and exercise 2/03 - 11/08.  Now back on metformin 500 ER.

Hi,  I have a bout with flue like symptons and haveing high blood sugars.  I know there is a sliding scale out there that tells you howmuch extra insulin you should give yourself?  Does anyone have any idea how I can get this information.

Thank you  in advance,

STAN
