Moved from scooter (7 weeks and three casts) to no cast and GIANT black boot and use of walker a week ago..and to cane on Tuesday.SWAM laps for an hour Tuesday..using cane only..dove in after removing the  BOOT and a friend moved the boot to the lift chair when I was done..swam an HOUR..surgical foot stiff and draggy but..I swam..none the less.

Walking a bit without the cane today..

So....This was a magical week...

PT starts on 12-15....I hope to swim more and then get back to golf..putting...and walking...at least by late Dec..

NORMALCY..??? Dr. says 9 months but..I can do it faster...surgery was on 9-29....

Taking it slow and easy but..this week was MAJOR....So much proigress.....and FREEDOM..driving again..swimming......walking..balance returning...and

...getting to Starbucks's by myself!!!!!!!

YEA for skinny Vanilla latte's...

Eat healthy over the holidays and have a healthy and happy end of 2008 and GREAT 2009!

Glad to hear that things are moving along "swimmingly"!  Given your motivation and dedication, I suspect that you will heve a speedier recovery than most.  Keep up that good work.  Spirit

Thanks...really trying to move forward. Once I ditched the scooter for the walker..I was really motivated to use the cane...I did not like the walker..though..I did use it for the Opera one night....(the previous month..I used a wheelchair for an symphony concert..)

Now..I use the cane in the house and my nifty and ....way better-looking retractible hiking stick when out...

My surgeon said it is a 9 month process and I am not rushing but..moving along..best as I can.

I am anxious to start PT late in Dec....ankle feels good but two toes are stiff and need work....

So..step  by step..quite literally!!!!!!!!!!!

When I am more awake..I want to really learn to use this BOARD...

Happy Holidays, Sprit...and to all..........!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last October my daughter-in-law slipped on some water in the school cafeteria where she teaches and sprained her left ankle.  She had the "big black boot" on her ankle for a while.  My son dropped a big box on his right foot at UPS about two weeks later so he ended up with a "big black boot" as well.  They looked like they had entered a three-legged-race and lost.

Hope yours heals well.

I found out today that my orhotics are ready for Weds..and I can see the Dr. next Weds..the 17th..and possibly get back to shoes.....and I felt great as things are on schedule but.......

I just this second learned.....

that a friend's husbands..a really cool guy ... mid 70's......who is on Dialysis and not well.....tempted FATE.....

had a motorcycle accident and has a broken ankle..and...MY ankle surgeon is fixing his injury Friday..GADS..

You just never know when the hell something will come along to change your direction.

I personally feel great to have gotten this far..feeling good..making progress....on the road to recovery but..

hearing abour Gordon..blows me away...makes me want to work harder at my own goals...

PLEASE  be healthy and take care...............WOW...

OK..got my new orthotics..they fit in my short hikers and sneakers but are tight... on the surgical foot in my golf shoes..but....I do  not need those til January...so asume the swelling will go down..I start PT on the 22nd...

But..after close to three months!!!! what JOY to WALK in shoes...and not that BOOT. The scooter seems like ancient history.

Only allowed a 1-2 3 hours a day (gradually) without the giant boot for a week til I see the Dr....but..at least..overnight..hikers and not the boot and the messy tangle of velcro straps...at 3AM!!!!!

Back to AM swims on weekends.....health club weekdays...not my FULL schedule as yet but, working on it..and.....as I can now get on a scale...a few pounds crept up during my medically enfored incarceraton..so..

as ususal..more to do! More hard work....more need for:

Patience....

RECENT blood work..

After a vacation in the food-filled South and a number of slip-ups..still not bad:

Fasting BG 112

BP 120/68

Total Cholesterol 155/168 (two different recent tests)

HDL  68/66

LDL  65/75

A1c  6.1

Tri-gly finally lower....118 (upped Niaspan to 2000 mg a day 6 months ago)

changed to Simvastatin 40mg about a year ago. (only two scripts I take)

so..how do I get my A1c down a bit more?????????

*****Do my numbers mean anything to anyone?? suggestions? I think they sound good...

I assume...get back on track with more than just AM swims..and get back to PM workouts????

July was 110/115 F most of the month so..I kind of hibernated all day after my morning 90 mins swim..no walking..no hiking..no golf..no energy

But....it is almost FALL in AZ...my ankle is almost healed (3 small toes still weak and two bigger ones...still stiff)

But...I FEEL GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However..any suggestions appreciated!

so..within weeks..I ought to be able to get back to my ususal activities..

Are you taking any meds for the diabetes? Metformin is the usual first drug. The numbers look very good to me.

No

I have never taken any meds for Diabetes..Dr keeps saying I am fine..but..Pre-Diabetic so..I am pretty careful but..was amazed that after a lapse for a few months..blood work was that good but..A1c has been way lower so..

I am now back on track!
