Every once in awhile I get an extreme knot between my thumb and forefinger on either one or both hands. Massaging will usually help in time, but it really hurts.

Is it possibly linked to my Type II/

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Dear Jorgie,

Can't help with this but I get the same thing, usually between the little and ring fingers.  I assume it's something like leg cramps, but don't know.  Hope yours gets better.

Doesn't sound like diabetes, could be carpel tunnel syndrone.  Do you do repetative work with your hand (typing, piano playing?)

As one with carpal tunnel, it doesn't sound like that, as there is often numbness and/or tingling.  Carpal tunnel syndrom often affects the the thumb, forefinger & middle finger since their nerves all go thru the same nerve bundle tunnel.

Are you getting well-balanced nutrition?  I'm not sure what you mean by a "knot" but assuming it's not a physical lump, but rather a cramping, perhaps check your potassium levels, thyroid, or even arthritis or writer's cramp.

I can feel a physical lump that I have to massage to loosen it up.

You might want to see a hand specialist; I'd certainly mention it to your primary and see about a referral.

Do either of the fingers ever get "stuck" when you try to bend - or unbend them?  We diabetics are also more susceptible to "trigger finger" and there are nodules associated with that.  You read about trigger finger on the web.  I've had a coupla fingers treated and the hand doc said it's so very common among diabetics, but is almost never listed as one of the complications of diabetes.  He estimated that 70+% of his patients have diabetes.
