My problem is NO weight loss in the time since diagnosis and meds, which was Oct. 08.  I have great BG#'s, follow low carb diet, exercise 30-40 mins a day (walks) and still no weight loss.  HELP !

Brenda,

Personally, I have found that the only way I can loose weight is to reduce calorie intake. When I cut down to ~1200/day I loose weight.

The other thing is walking. From what I have read around on the web walking is the best exercise for loosing weight but (and you knew there was a but coming right?) you don't really start fat burning for the first 40 minutes! So to burn fat when walking, walk longer than 40 minutes.

Please keep in mind that these are my personal opinions and should not be construed as official Joslin advice.

Exercise is a key to weight loss, but I find calorie intake has to be very carefully monitored (every single calorie in the day). Then combined with exercise you need to create an energy (calories) intake shortfall. Say for example your calorie intake to maintain weight is 1500 calories per day without walking. If you cut that to 1200 calories your body will be short 300 calories per day. One pound of fat has about 3500 calories, so with this shortfall you should lose about 1 lb every 11 days. If you add 60 minutes of walking per day you should burn an extra 300 calories, or your daily shortfall will be 600 calories per day. This reduces the days to lose 1 lb. in half.

Hope that helps some,

Ron

There may be a couple of issues to consider: (a) talk with your doctor about whether you are taking medications that help or hurt efforts to lose weight (b) consult with an exercise expert about whether the intensity of your walks, not just the length, is enough to help weight loss. The recent position paper by the American College of Sports Medicine recommends that "moderate intensity physical activity greater than 250 minutes per week has been associated with clinically significant weight loss."

I take a medication for depression that is associated with weight gain.  I have to really cut down the calories and from experience I have found that for me I have to walk about 4 miles at a time to benefit.  Also drinking ALOT of water (a gallon a day spaced out throughout the day) seems to speed up fat burning.  You can download your favorite music free on YOUTUBE and strip out the MP3.  My favorite upbeat music really helps my walking and has a great antidepressant effect as well.  I dont know what I will do when the snow comes.
