Hi,

My son has diabetes for a very young age. I am pregnant now and I'm afraid that my second child might get diabetes too. So I would like to ask for tips and advice to avoid juvenile diabetes.

I spoke to one of our endocrinologists about your question and he said that most likely your second child will not develop diabetes, but it is a possibility.  He also said that there is a lot of interest right now in how to prevent diabetes in at-risk individuals (e.g. child with a sibling), but nothing has been proven effective yet.  However, there may be some investigational efforts that you may be interested in.  We would suggest that you speak to your child's diabetes doctor about your questions and also consider contacting JDRF and TrialNet to learn more about these efforts.

I and my twin both have T1. I came down with it first, she three years later. My younger sister does not have it.
