I am new to the group but like you I was dx at 11 I am 43 and hope to live a long life too.I have one option that I truely believe when it comes to diabetic. One shoe dont fit all and each case is individual, for exsample I have the weirdest reaction to certain meds that would not make anyone elseflinch.Nerotioun sp? makes me seem drunk,I have a high highneed for pain meds with a low tolerance for pain,The worst is how brittle I am with insulin my sugar can be very high and just a couple of units will bottom me out.I also dont feel low until around 20 now.

It sounds like your doing a very good job with control but please be aware stress and mind set has alot to due with it.I have spent to many years worry when I was going to die of this that I missed out on alot of living.Good luck

Sounds like you are a candidate for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and a pump.  With the latest information that diabetic lows can lead to dementia (Alzheimer's), it is even more important to be sure you don't go too low.

Hi Josh, Dr. Wolpert, as in Howard Wolport of Smart Pumping? When you first mentioned CGM and that you were on a pump, I assumed that you were getting a Minimed CGM. Both my son and daughter are using the Navigator and are really pleased with it. They are both able to test a lot less because it is so reliable. You will feel much more empowered once you have that little gizmo telling you what is going on every single minute of the day. I don't know how we lived without it for so long, but I know that I hope that neither of them has to, unless there is a cure of course.

Hi Josh,

The responses to your posts have included a lot of good advise. I can't beat Janet's story of the 97-year old bicyclist, but I have been riding a bicycle for 30 years, and about a year ago my bicycle logs showed that I had accumulated 100,000 miles (over 30 years). So naturally I believe that the exercise has been good for me. I was dx when I was 10, and I'm 76 now. They found background retinopathy when I was about 30, and it stayed in the background for more than 40 years before it became proliferative in one eye.

I have used insulin pumps for almost 14 years, and started using a Navigator almost a year ago. I have a fixture for the Navigator on the handlebar of my bicycle, and for so many years I never imagined that something like that would ever be possible. Last week, Dr Wolpert downloaded nine months of data from my Navigator, and I'm very pleased to say that he liked what he saw. (Since I live in Arizona I only get to see Dr Wolpert once a year.)

Josh, you sound like you are motivated to maintain and improve your control. Don't stress too much about being less than perfect, because that's just the way it is. Just keep on doing the best you can.

Tom
