I can have that reaction, too, and not just with OTC stuff.  Anything with codeine puts me to sleep for a couple of hours, then I rebound into excitibility.  I feel like someone plugged electric wires into my joints.  Not pleasant.  None of my doctors ever expressed concern, just made a note not to prescribe those things.  Benadryl can have that effect sometimes also.  I always ask the pharmacist for advice and mention this problem when I buy OTC meds.  Seems to help.

I don't have that reaction from benedryl - it puts me to sleep well, but I did have it with a small dose of Xanax.  It made me all twitchy and kept me from sleeping.

cfaulkner,  Just make sure that you note (keep a written record) what problems you have with each one and report to the doctor.  I have had some problems, but not many.  Allergies, yes, and severe.  Some meds I have a reaction to at first use, but then my body adjusts and no more problems.  Also be alert for conflicts between OTC meds and also with Rx meds.  Just realize that every person can have different or no problems.

Has anyone out there noticed that people have more (and often different) side effects from prescription medications than the literature and doctors indicate?  Particularly with the elderly. I used to think I was just an isolated case but I don't know.  I seem to get side effects from everything the doctors give me.

Has anyone else ran into this?  If so, how do you deal with it?
