Hello to all I am new to message boards but I am desperate for advice.  My son who is 5 years old was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in sept of 08. We started lantus & humalog and got his hbga1c to 6.8 which is great. He is very active and we felt the pump would be great for him considering the great benefits it has to offer plus help reduce complications later in life. Since I am a nurse practitioner I felt this was the way to go. We started the pump two weeks ago and I hate it. Sugars are sky high, he started to have anger outbursts and when high enough has bedwetting. As a medical professional I know things take time but I would love to her some experiences with young children being on the pump and if they had a rocky course like us.

Hi:

Have you asked his doctor?  Being on an insulin pump reguires training in areas of advance carb counting   They should know who to self manage their diabetes during illness and wellness, be willing to check glucose over 4 tinmes a day.

Your Pump rep should be able to point you to a Paren't support groups for pumps with children. But the POLO group- aa part of the JDRF (juvnile diabetes founddation) has wondeful support groups.

I am sure you are talking with your doctor- but as a pump user- you need to test more often- and test at regular time and chart all of your results. I found an excel spreadsheet worked great. Your doctor needs to be able to analyze his sugars at multiple times of the day in order to build a proper  basil profile.

When I first went on the pump and for about the first year, I tested almost every 2 hours. The important thing is to test at the same times and make notes if there are problems- this will allow you to see a pattern (if there is one). Also you might want to look into the continuous monitor system that the paradigm pump offers - where it tests and alarms for you.

It does get better and it does get easier but you do have to dedicate some time to regular testing.

Good Luck and keep us up to date!
