Hi Rich,

I do intensive insulin therapy and calculate my humalog dose by counting grams of carb.  This makes it relatively easy for me to calculate my caloric intake.  After consulting with my doctors we decided that the best way for me to control my weight was to check it daily and adjust my caloric intake up or down a couple of hundred calories depending upon whether I was approaching the top or bottom of my weight range. My weight range is 130 lbs minimum and 140 lbs max (I'm 5'11" tall).

Of course you should consult with your doctor before you do anything very radical.

What is your weight and height, by the way?

Rich,

I think you should probably be glad to have lost the 30 pounds.  If you're the same height I am and have come down from 200 to 170 I don't think you should spend any energy on trying to gain weight!  You're better off without it unless your doctor tells you otherwise!

Hi Rich:

In order to gain weight you need to eat more calories and possibly adjust your insulin.  Have you stopped losing weight since you were diagnosed?  If not, then maybe you have to work with your doctor and nutritionist to change your meal plan.

When were you first diagnosed?

Dx 2/01, pumping with Cozmo, Celiac, dx 8/05

Dear Rich:

People with Type I often lose signficant amounts of weight prior to diagnosis.  Once diagnosed and started on insulin weight loss should abate.  If you are contiuing to loss weight you are either not eating enough, your blood sugars are still out of control or a secondary process is occuring which your health provider would need to look into.   To gain back to your desirable body weight you will need to increase your calories in a balanced fashion -protein, fat and carbohydrate and may indeed need more insulin.   As suggested by another discussion board member a trip to the dietitian may be in order.  Good luck.
