According to the Y one mile equals 36 laps (72 pool lengths) and one water fitness class is equivalent to swimming one mile. I'm so happy to be back going again.

The other news is that I re-joined the Y last week only to find out that the pool is closed this week for cleaning and maintenance (the whirlpool also). The good news is that they no longer charge for water aerobics, you just show up. I'm hoping to go at least three times a week, but have to figure out how to do breakfast. I generally eat breakfast around 6:00 AM. I guess I should be able to exercise two hours later. I generally eat a big breakfast and it holds me a long time. Sometimes I don't eat lunch until 2:00 or 3:00 PM.

Well, I won't bore you anymore. Hop everyone is having a nice weekend. By the way I posted a new picture today.

I did WW when they first came into being (and it only cost $2.00 a week) and I lost 84 pounds, but it was very difficult as it was a diet plan that you needed to stick to. Onions and carrots were restricted foods as were tomatoes, peas and corn. It is so much easier now, I can eat nearly anything I want. The only problem I have is remembering to count carbs and not just points. Generally I eat Veggies tree times a day. Salad at lunch and dinner and sauteed veggies in my omelet in the morning. You have to eat two teaspoons of heart healthy oil a day, so I sautee my veggies in the olive oil and it's done.

Here in Massachusettts the Governor (and I'm sorry to say I voted for him) wants to weigh all children in certain grades and send a report home to the parents if their BMI is over a certain number. I wrote to him immediately and said that children who are fat have enough problems in school, what with being picked on and made fun of. I suffered terribly in school as a child.

They wrote back to me and said that children's heiht and weight is recorded by the school nurse anyway and they would just be reporting the information to the parents (like as a parent you don't know if you kid is fat or not). I can just see this. In a few years thye will be putting the "obese" (why can't we call fat, fat) in a fat class for extra exercise or some how finding some way to single them out so the other kids can find another reason top ick on them and I have a feeling that the rate of eating disorders will increase.

Is Obesity The Only Causal Factor for Diabetes?

There's a letter to the editor in today's New York Times from Alan R. Morse, President and Chief Executive of The Jewish Guild for the Blind which repeats the lament that "America’s widespread disregard for healthy nutrition and a more
physically active lifestyle is causing a wave of obesity ... and this is leading to more and more cases of
diabetes." You can read the letter at: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/12/opinion/lweb12diabetes.html?_r=1&emc=tnt&tntemail1=y

For the past year or so now, in its articles, the Times has been promoting the idea that the
patient is to blame for his or her diabetes because of being over
weight. And they have only been publishing letters which support this point of view. I've written to them suggesting that it's just possible that things other than obesity can be responsible for diabetes. I've been diabetic for over 40 years, am 5'11" tall and have never weighed more than 144 lbs, but they haven't responded to any of my letters.

I suppose it's easier, less expensive and more acceptable to the taxpayers to blame the patient and avoid funding research into solutions for the problem. Perhaps it would help if more of us wrote to them suggesting that all diabetes can't be blamed on obesity...
