Is there no way to get rid of all these spammers?  This is getting ridiculous.

Whalen,

Many of us do wish it was possible, but they are a problem for all discussion boards, forums, chat rooms, and in general all over the internet.  If they aren't spreading viruses, selling or promoting snake oil, they apparently feel that they are not fulfilling their destiny.

The only way I have seen them kept at bay is by some forums approving the first five to fifteen posts before the posts can appear, which generally discourages them as they want instant gratification of seeing they product on the board, forum, or in the discussion. Occasionally, they do stick around for that many post, but then are banned.

I detest these people as much as the next person and delete their spam emails in my inbox and their comments from my blog.  I do not advocate letting them take over a board like this one, but they have made some posts remain up for several days over the weekends, so they will keep hammering this site.  Unfortunately, the moderators are not able to babysit this 24/7.

I do have a suggestion for the site administrators.  Find a couple of your participants that you trust and make it possible for them to delete these spam posts.  They will need to be notified by the members of spam posts and by the site administrators when an advertising type post is approved so they do not delete these.  This has worked for some forums, but it can be very time consuming.

I guess I'm not paying attention or something. Where are these spammers you are talking about?

Jorgie -

You're not missing anything.  They're first-time posters who post lists of drugs, generally of the Rx variety, claiming you can order from them without a prescription.  If you do come across one of these spams, click the "Report Abuse" option (upper right).  Joslin generally gets rid of the spam fairly rapidly (except on weekends).

T2, diagnosed 12/98.  Diet and exercise 2/03 - 11/08.  Now back on metformin 500 ER.
