Well, I'm finally venturing into the new forum (and have to say I find it very hard to maneuver; not liking it much at all in fact).

I have a question.  For those of you who have tried the South Beach Diet, what are your thoughts about it?  Did you find success on it, what did you like or not like about it?

Thanks for any feedback!

Lisa

I will try this again....I started on reply and it disappeared without me doing a thing.  I feel like I do a hit and miss when reading this site anymore.  I am not sure where I have read and where I need to read and it gets me down.  Does anyone that used to do the old site feel confident with this site?

We just returned from a business trip down to Tenn and Alabama and returned to New York State to the aftermath of an ice storm.  Oh man, what a horror.  I fell walking up  my driveway.......I dislike winter with a passion.

Hi Lisa,

I agree that this board is not so user friendly.

I know I tried the South Beach Diet, obviously not successfully as I am no longer on it. BUT do not let me discourage you as I am off all diets right now and am just enjoying and accepting my fate. NOT A GOOD THING TO DO. But I musr admit I feel happy. So will continue for a short while.

I tried a Vegan diet and then vegetarian one as well, I never felt satisfied as well as when I have meat. What can I say? I have an eating problem and NO DIET will fix this as I now recognize it as an emotional thing. TOO LATE to fix at age 73 years.

I am a foodaholic!

I wish you success on any diet you choose to try.

Hi, yes it took me a bit also to figure this site out but it gets easier every time I do. South Beach is the way I have been trying to eat. I have lost 4 pounds since early December. I eat lean meat lower carb vegetables. my oatmeal in the morning. I have the South Beach Quick and Easy Cookbok. My new recipe for this week I hope to make quinoa pilaf. I also just have to cook for me and dh as the kids are grown. I also bought a rice cooker to make it easier for making brown rice. So yes I do like it. I get oatmeal, chocolate and nuts some of my favorite foods. Nancy

When I did So. Beach...strictly..I lost 3lbs a week..right now....after ankle surgery..I am not wiling to give up blueberries and yogurt.....and some citrus but..off bread/noodles.rice and or potatoes  for a couple of weeks after a French bakery binge.

I like So Beach..esp phase II...first weeks on Phase I are strict but..really..

it is a very sensible diet forever..

not a fad..just sensible eating...balanced....

I have 22 lbs to lose...

I lost 30 and got my BG in check...no meds....then stalled for a year on weight loss due to the ankle injury.....

so..walking again and swimming...three months post-op.

It will be months til I can do all of my actvities..hike and golf.... but..I am doing PT and staying healthy..so..I think So. Beach is great..and..I am semi-vegetarian..I eat lots of beans, legumes,lentils.... veggies and seafood...eggs..and tiny bit of good cheese as flavoring..but..mostly..a plant based diet.

LOTS of spices....see Penzey's catalogue.....

Portion size and calories do COUNT!

Good luck........

Thanks so much for the replies.  I started last Tuesday and have lost 5 1/2 pounds in the first week.

I had a random blood sugar of 179 last week that scared the bejeebers out of me.  My fastings were still within normal range, but I can see the writing on the wall.

So far, I've also found a very big increase in energy and cessation of the daily headaches I've had for years.  I'm thinking that there is something in the grains or fruits that I'm allergic to.  I'll be interested to see what causes a reaction when I start adding them back in.

I am eating a can of green beans every day (one of the few green veggies I actually like), and have a salad as well.  Other than that, it's eggs, cheese, lean meats, and nuts.  It'll get boring, but I've decided boring is better than sick.

Hi, Shortie, and welcome back to the land of Yak Trax and Stabilicers.

You asked about not being sure where you've read and not read.  I haven't tried anything fancy with this new site (such as posting a photo), but I am confident my message reading routine is working for me.  Here's what I do:

On the Home page, to the right of the Welcome message, is a list, the last of which is View all discussions.  I click on that.  That takes me to Topics.  Immediately above Topics is a horizontal list on which one of the choices is Unread.  I click on that.

By doing the above, I can read all the new messages without having to re-read the old ones.  The older ones are, however, available if you scroll up from the new one you're reading.

Now if there were only more messages to read.  Since no newly diagnosed people seem to be finding this site, I'm assuming the site doesn't yet come up on Google.  Meanwhile, the oldies seem to be dropping out.  Maybe Joslin needs to email the oldies, assuring them the site is up and running and asking for questions and participation.

T2, diagnosed 12/98.  Diet and exercise 2/03 - 11/08.  Now back on metformin 500 ER.

I agree we need more participation.  I usually just lurk, only posting when I have issues, but it sure is discouraging to see so few posts.  Dee

Hi, ABQMom!  Hi, Everybody else!!

I seem to recall that you used Jenny Craig for a while, ABQMom.  See how long it's been since I've been at Joslin (old AND new)!

I would imagine that the South Beach Diet is like any other program: you get BORED with it.  You are ambushed by something not on the diet.  We've ALL been there.

I've had a LOT of turmoil lately.  Well, let's be honest, the upheaval in my life started at the end of 2005.  And I'm so GRATEFUL that I got the LapBAND.  I wouldn't have been able to survive the turmoil without gaining a hundred pounds or more in the process, if I didn't have the BAND.  My weight has stayed pretty constant over the past three years.  And I give 100% of the credit to the BAND.

And it thrills me beyond words that my Daughter has the BAND, too....ESPECIALLY now that she's pregnant!  She has an appointment to get an unfill, and she should not have any problems for the entire pregnancy.  AFTER the baby is born (and I become a GRANDMA!), she can work with the BAND to take off any "baby fat."

Woooooooooo...just barely back, and already I've stepped on a soapbox!  Sorry for hijacking the thread, ABQMom!

I got off track as my ankle began  to heal and I was out more...restarting basic exercise...still in PT....swimming etc..as the ankle permits...HOWEVER today is Inauguration day..I am having a crowd of folks..14 months to 85 years of age..all races and ages and educational background and..ethnicities.....for BRUCH to celebrate the new Administration..... We are pumped!

So..lots of foods in the house...breads and egg/cheese casseroles..etc.....I try to make good daily choices but..have been a bit off track....!!!!birthday (the 16th) and all..etc.etc..etc..the usual excuses...

So last night I got out the SOUTH BEACH BOOK...after hours of cooking and prep..........I read and re-read the book.....and made a shopping list for 1-24...........

I made a FIRM  commitment to get back on PHASE I of So.Beach on Saturday the 24th....

I knew this week was not a good one..so..my PLAN is to wind down..get foods out of the house like BREAD..always a problem..

and Grocery shop after my Sat AM swim...I also wrote my exercise plan for the next 3-4 weeks....

Chiense New Year is the 26th..I will be on my way back to South Beach....by then...

Some have already broken  New Year resolutions.... well....I wait til after New years..and after my birthday  and try to begin anew....on  CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck to all of us!

I thought the South Beach Diet included things like grains and fruits, and was mostly heart-healthy low fat, high fiber foods the same as I've been having almost since day one of diagnosis 10 years ago.  Granted, I only listened to the CD audiobook version of the book, and it was a while back, but that's what I thought it was.  In fact, I remember the author (Dr. Agatston?) saying that it was NOT a low carb diet.  He's a cardiologist, so it made sense to me that he was recommending eating heart-healthfully.  Pretty much the only thing that I remember thinking that I do differently was that I eat more carefully-controlled portions.  Someone just starting-out with controlling carbs with carb-counting could easily adapt these foods and this way of eating to her own.

Hi Lisa:

It's nice to see some familiar name's on here.  The new board is flashy but it's not as easy to use or navigate as the old board, IMHO.

Check out PastaQueen's blog at http://www.pastaqueen.com/halfofme/ -- she lost half herself using the South Beach Diet as her starting point.  Jennette has a good sense of humor and some very good suggestions but ultimately we have to take any plan we pursue and change it around to fit our own personality & circumstances.

Good luck -- wishing you the best!

Hi Lisa

Glad to see you here.  I know this is a horror to navigate.

I do like the SBD a lot, but have fallen off the wagon.  Yeah, the first two weeks are tough, but really it's the first few days until cravings for carbs subside.  My issue is trying to train for a duathalon while reducing carbs. So i eat a banana before I run, etc.

Get the newest book, there have been changes since the first book.
