My son is 18 and leaving for Northeastern University in Boston (we live in TX). He was diagnosed a year ago and so him going off to college is a little frightening to say the least. Any advice out there for parents with a kid going off to college and him being so far away and so obviously cannot monitor him. thank you.

College life presents a number of temptations which potentially can create complications for anyone, more so for a young person with the health management issues associated with diabetes type I. One that comes to mind is the drinking culture that for many is synonymous with college life. As we know, alcohol, unless used in moderation and in combination with food, increases the risk of hypoglycemia. It also has been known to interfere with important routines and with memory in general. Hopefully your son is one of the sensible young people who will be able to navigate these waters without serious incident.
