These two Dr's prescribe a VEGAN diet for Diabetics. Are these quacks or legitimate programs and diets?

Dear Anne,

Ornish is certainly not a quack, I think McDougall, whose diet is very similar, makes claims for the diet not necessarily true. This type of diet has been shown to be very beneficial for heart disease, artery disease, etc.

I would find either of them too restrictive for myself. Also, I question whether eating so much carbohydrate could be good for diabetes. I would have to eat so little to keep my blood sugar down that I would be hungry all the time.

Anne,

Look for a cookbook called "Laurel's Kitchen" and read the introduction. It is quite long, informative of the vegan lifestyle and entertaining as well.

Hope you like to cook:)

Dr. Ornish is legitimate, but some find his essentially vegan diet hard to follow. We likely would all be better off for it though.

You may want to also check out Dr. Pritikin and Dr. Mirkin. They are both legitimate also, but Pritikin is more into bringing you into his "clinic". Mirkin advocates eating high fiber and low fat, but does allow some fish and lean meat.
