  • Re: Friday Funnies 29 Jul 11

We're used to the heat here in the Vegas area, so triple digits are typical this time of year for us. Plus it is a dry heat. Our humidity is under 10%. I'm sure you guys are baking in Texas.

Dr. Bernstein is not for everyone, but it does work for those with the discipline and desire to make it work. Nothing said in the thread implies that eating refined carbs is good for anyone, much less diabetics. If you read the posts carefully you will see that they refer to whole grains, foods with fiber (including some fruits and vegetables) and generally

  • Re: Dawn Phenomenon

I have a similar problem. I am taking 20 units of Levemir at bedtime and I make sure to eat some carbs when I get up in the morning. Skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do for a strong Dawn Effect. You need to eat to get your system working again and that will stop the rising bg level.

You may not be getting enough calories for the amount of exercise you do. What is your ratio of carbs/protein/fat in your diet. You need protein for your muscles to recover after exercising and enough calories to satisfy your body that you are not trying to starve yourself.

Metformin is known to have digestive problems and should only be taken with food. The other drug, glimepiride (brand name Amaryl), is not known to have digestive problems. By the way, I take both drugs (1000 mg of metformin twice per day and 2 mg of glimepiride 2 times per day). It does take some people awhile to get used to metformin, so give it at

  • Re: Monitoring after having Tea with Splenda as a sweetener

The jury is still out on the effect of coffee on blood glucose levels. Using Splenda in moderation should not be a problem, but they do use dextrose and maltodextrin as a filler and both are low level carbohydrates. My bg levels have never been affected by Splenda sweetened products.

1 mg is not a very high dose. I take 4 mg. 2mg in the morning and 2 mg in the evening. You definitely need to be seeing a diabetes specialist, usually an Endocrinologist. Taking meds does not relieve you of the responsibility to eat right. Are you still eating refined carbs/starches? Do you understand the Glycemic Index for foods? There is a lot more

  • Re: Levemir Lumps?

None of those reactions and the lumps go away within minutes after rubbing them. No pain, no itching and no bother really. Just thought it was unusual. I'll mention it to my endo in Aug.
